CRISIS UK
‐ Crisis SmartMove Westminster

Crisis SmartMove Westminster is being delivered through a local partner organisation, Threshold Housing Advice and is being advertised as the Westminster Rent Assistance scheme, and will provide comprehensive housing advice and rent‐ deposit support and access to the Private Rented Sector (PRS) for single homeless people in the Westminster area.

Since January 2009, the scheme has assisted 26 people into long‐term accommodation bringing the total for the year to 35.

One of the main efforts of this service was to maintain excellent partnerships, which have been developed with major organisations in the Westminster area, and it is fair to say, that this service is now an integral part of the resettlement strategy for a number of them.

In order to continue providing a quality service, Westminster SmartMove has worked tirelessly to remove the stigma attached to those receiving welfare benefits. Although more work will be done to expand and promote the service, more and more landlords and letting agents are approaching the service directly having received positive feedback from various sources.

Westminster SmartMove is confident that the network of landlords will continue to grow due to the hard work and dedication invested in the project. Although the scheme cannot provide cash incentives, landlords have been assured that they will receive the following service:
  • A choice of potential tenants that have been given pre‐tenancy training and are ready to live independently in the private sector.
  • A free consultancy service via telephone and email where legal advice is provided to ensure problems/ issues are averted or dealt with efficiently.

Client Success Story

John is a 27-year-old single male who had been sleeping rough in Westminster, London. He was referred to the Westminster SmartMove project by The Connections at St Martins as he was very keen to get his life back on track but did not have any money to use as a deposit. SmartMove helped John into accommodation in the private rented sector, and also helped him apply for a Community Care Grant to buy essential household items.

John expressed an interest in helping SmartMove as a volunteer and has started carrying out essential research for the development of the project. He is showing real progress and intends to pursue a career in housing.
